Building blogs has become easier and easier over time thanks to the introduction of Widgets. Widgets are smart little pieces of code that you can add to your template that quickly and simply increase your blog's functionality. Widgets allow people with little programming knowledge to make their blogs both work and look a great deal better than before.
These are some of my personal favorites that have proved to be both popular on the web, and effective on the blog.
Of course what the "best" widget, or widgets are for you is going to depend very much on your blog and what you want to acheive with it. I reccomend going to Widgipeida and searching around through the thousands of widgets they have there if you don't find what you're looking for here.
FeedCount
FeedCount is a handy little widget that allows you to track how many people have subscribed to your blog's RSS feed, and to display the number in a cute little button on your site. This is a great way to see how your blog is growing, and to show off a little too!
WIMZI
Weird name aside, this is actually a widget that allows you to add AIM to your blog, turning it into a virtual chatroom! I have no idea why they called it WIMZI, but it is a cute little widget that will allow you to interact with your readers in real time, and is customizeable to fit the color scheme of your blog.
Feedjit
Want a quick and easy way to monitor traffic to your site? This is it. Feedjit is a widget that makes an entry when people arrive on your blog, and again when they leave. This means that you can immediately see how many people come to your blog, what country they are from, and how long they are staying around.
AuctionAds
Want to make some money with your blog? AuctionAds is a service with a widget that displays auctions on your blog. If anyone clicks on the widget and buys a product, then you get a cut of the sale.
PacMan Widget
This is so much fun! A little PacMan Game Widget that allows your readers to play a game right on your blog. PacMan is one of the oldest and most loved arcade games in the world, so you're sure to make friends and entertain your visitors by adding this widget! This widget can be added to all the major blog networks, and most of the lesser known ones as well.
Flickr Flash Photo Stream Badge
Want to show pictures to your readers? Do you have a lot of pictures to share, but very little time to change them? The Flickr Flash Photo Stream Badge allows your readers to view photos from your Flickr account, and plays them in a slideshow on your blog. This great little widget means that you go from having a boring static blog to one with personalised moving images in just a few clicks.
